I recommend seeing this talk given by the engineer and professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, ECIO Bertellotti. This is a different way of approaching sustainable cities.
After listening I've been thinking about some of the concepts raised by him and let me continue the argument.
Utopia Is talk of sustainable cities?
To begin to investigate should first define what we mean by "city" and that "sustainable."
Let's start with what is meant by "sustainable"?
The term refers to something that will remain, which may continue over time.
So what things need to stay? It is very common to talk about sustainable production, sustainable consumption, sustainable design, which means longer able to maintain production and consumption but without a holistic view, meaning that ignores the full impact of each action. Does not speak to remain in a balanced but refers to the product may be "x" without depleting the resources that are made. Ie to maintain the pattern of consumption of new products.
What is the meaning of sustainability? How things stand and what not? Models, products, companies, countries, have always changed, will not stay, no sense must remain. But there is something fundamental to our survival to stay and this balance and stability is provided to us by nature. If this does not remain, it will be impossible to live in an entertaining.
Now if, what we mean by "city"? if we believe it is a space inhabited by hundreds of thousands of people who care about their food from afar, if a city understand that there is a large infrastructure required for their existence on the destruction of pre-existing nature there, if we understand it consumer space, meaning that it is the space where it consumes energy and raw materials will be returned to the system as waste, if we talk about spaces noisy, dirty, smooth, homogenates, if these are the cities where we live, what is the meaning of sustainability over time?
course the city also has the beauty of cultural exchange, the relationship of people that inhabit it. It has public areas that the community feels like their own. It's all part of what a city should keep in time, what makes sense to support.
sustainable cities Then when we can speak of a utopia contradictory (as is) or we can start thinking about cities that produce what they consume, they are integrated nature and its flows, cities that are based on the relationship of the members of the community, community understanding by all the people who live there, including animals, plants and even the earth itself.
According ECIO Bertellotti, sustainable cities, and have existed there, just enough to look at some Andean peoples or cities that currently are sustainable.
I have to say that this approach to sustainability throws overboard any vision that you have posted in this blog. Basically, because I've always published instrumental solutions, technology and while knowledge is necessary, it is first essential that there is an understanding of our surroundings and ourselves to act sensitively to what appears to be thoroughly enjoying it.
sustainable design or sustainable product only makes sense if you use it correctly understanding that is part of a whole, but the eco-design, at best, is a mere wash of guilt that allows us to consuming from a state of necessity in the same way as always, awkward to nature.
