Fake Dune Versus Real Dune

Divorce Star II International Meeting of Double Stars Observers

Hello friends.
Although I am committed to the children of the OED will write a detailed chronicle the Second International DSO for publication in the January, I can not resist briefly explain what if you gave this historic meeting (at least for me it was ...) which as you know, was held at the amazing observatory that the ASA has in the city of Sabadell, located about 20km from Barcelona.
Saturday dawned with something covered the sky ... But I must confess that the spirits were in style, there was nothing that could damage long awaited moment.
At about 8:45 am coming through the doors of the observatory ...
... he encountered Xavi Miret and his lovely daughter (who did not miss a single lecture ...) Tòfol Tobal, Carles Schnabel and astrophysicists, Joseph A. Knight, David Montes, Francisco J. Alonso already talking animatedly, of course double. While
gave us a fabulous credentials and waterproof bag (ideal for carrying celestial charts and maps to the field) with several books and documentation, appeared the other participants. Among the French presence was "mon ami" Florent Losse ... a great guy in all aspects ... I do not ever leave us throughout the meeting. You can not imagine what we've come to laugh, talk and of course learn (I certainly much more of him he of me) during these two days.
With almost British punctuality (in honor of Bob Argyle ...), around 9:30 we proceeded to settle into the conference room located in the same building, in order to hear the welcome that, within three official languages of the meeting, we did Àngel Massallé, president of the ASS. then Carles Schnabel, Tobal Tòfol Edgar Soulié and also in English, French and Castilian respectively. They did the same with a statement of intent on the objectives of the Second International Meeting of OED, giving the inauguration.
Next gave way to Bob Argyle, a renowned doubles player and president of the Webb Society, who delighted us with an entertaining and interesting talk was about the history of the double section of the Webb Society. Here we have in full talk
About 10:15 am we had the pleasure to listen to Edgar Soulié, chairman of the doubles of the SAF, who spoke with his clear and deliberate style over 30 years activity of the committee he chairs.
The first two, on the history of astronomy of double ... of which I like. At about 11:15
was the first break. The organizers had prepared us a Coffee Dramatic break with its espresso and all ...
During the break we take to make us the official photo of the meeting, and here you can see. After coffee repairman returned to business.
First we had the pleasure of listening to the media, the history of the double section of the SSA: 1975-2010, presented by well-known, admired and admirable Josep M ª Oliver.
To continue, another story. Now was the turn of Tobal Tòfol friend who made a brilliant exposition on projects related to the double and developed by the OAG between 1985 and 2010.
Continuing the impressive array of media "doubles player, David Valls-Gabaudan, an astrophysicist who now works for the CNRS at the Observatoire de Paris, we are left with the mouth open to expose a project called the Pro-Am: The distance to the Pleiades. (Obtained through the study of the only eclipsing binary star can be found in this well-known open cluster). About
14:00 and finished once the talk of David Valls, opened a lively discussion that continued throughout the two hour lunch in a restaurant by the lake (with ducks and all) that are in the same park where the observatory is located. Here's
table from one side ...
And here from the other
And here I and my good friend Florent Losse ... Yeah, yeah, that of NR!
not you can get an idea of the didactic and fun that becomes ...¡¡ A great guy!
After lunch and after the mandatory coffee (which was not something to sleep ...) we went to the observatory a pleasant walk to resume communications afternoon shift.
The first speaker was Jean Louis Agati of the SAF with a talk on one of the projects in the works, called radial velocity, and has as objective the study of the orbital planes of binary visual check some kind of organizing them.
After Jean Louis, it was the turn of Laurent Corp, a famous variability AFOEV-AAVSO member who showed us a masterly way, what are the different types of eclipsing binaries as well as and how can we measure the minimum eclipsing binaries.
then had one of our fantastic hosts. Charles Schnabel, a keen and better person, focused his interesting talk on the theme of double stars Occultations by the Moon. In which we showed the method to measure the AP and the separation of stars separated by as little as 0.1 "! with help from our traveling companion.
Like the morning, afternoon promised.
The following list was another of the "historical" in the SAF. Pierre Durand was not presenting a communication on his work in the Re-observation of double stars Muller catalog. A thorough work over the years by several French astronomers whose objective is to confirm and measure the pairs discovered by the great Paul Muller.
To continue the round of communications, Antonio Bernal, an astronomer at the Observatory Fabra in Barcelona (my favorite observatory, by the way) we masterfully illustrated on the details of their observations and their "tricks" to get the best out of an excellent instrument but rather rusty from lack of use, before he could take over the observatory.
The following statement was given by UPM mathematician, Rafael Hernandez told us about a mathematical method that has been developed to calculate preliminary orbits visual double system of long period, having only 6 measures angles position and separation.
Unable to make a video call from the USNO by Brian Mason (things in the military, can not install Skype on their computers ...) We ended the day with a presentation by Bob Argyle in a document sent by Brian in setting out the measures Statistical data provided by WDS in the past 50 years with special incapié to the great work done by the amateur community and the precision of their methods and data ... The truth is that under the data, the amateur doubles player can be very proud of our work.
As a final surprise, the members of the ASA had prepared us a visit to the amazing library of the group, where we could browse many historical books as Camille Flammarion original or an incredible lunar atlas conducted in the late nineteenth century photographs made with 1 meter 50 cm.
Here you can see at astrophysicist David admiring Montes as unique individuals.
And here's a snapshot of writing in this blog, with the "legendary" Bob Argyle.
But the surprises did not end here. The friends of the ASA we had reserved a visit to the spectacular Observatory, with an impressive "cucumber" double focus of 50cm and Newton-Cassegrain, commanded from an enviable control room ... Even though I know the team, I never tire of seeing and touch each time I go to Sabadell.
Well folks, this is what gave on whether the day on Saturday.
Continuing with the day on Sunday October 24 ...

However, although the program marked the first appearance at 10:00, Carlos Schnabel called us so about 9:30 we were at the observatory since it was for that hour when communication was provided through a video link from Canberra (Australia) with Dave Herald, President of the International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA).
In it we were talking about the methodology that continues to prepare an observing session stunt by lunar occultations. Very much in line with the work presented by Carles Schnabel ... Here you can see a point in his speech ...
After the intervention of Dave, David Valls surprised us with an unscheduled speech that dealt with the importance and scientific impact has the work of the Survey systematic survey in which we work with Garraf kids ... He ended his speech by thanking very effusive the work of amateurs, which complements the work of professional astronomy is advancing much more of what we think ... very motivating for all the fans that we were there.
Continuing with the schedule, the next to speak was Xavier Miret, who presented with great enthusiasm and clarity of the draft Common Proper Motions OAG Wide Pairs Survey, in which I have the chance to participate actively with them and nine other amateur and professional teams dedicated himself to a systematic survey of the sky, looking for new common proper motion pairs, through pictures POSSII.
The next presentation was given by a brilliant astrophysics student named Francis J. UCM Alonso Floriano (which will be talking about in the near future.) It told us about a research project which seek proper motion companions to nearby stars of the Local Association. Here Francisco stands the phenomenon.
finally my turn. You can imagine the nerves, it was my official introduction in society ... and it showed ...
My feeling at the end of the presentation was that neither had said what he meant and meant as kindness Luck ... the public, he did as if he had understood everything. Well, the truth is that the work was very sencillito to understand because it deals with a comparison of the results obtained by relative astrometry on POSSII plates (those used in the OAG CPMWP Survey) using various methods and software reduction use regularly.
then the nerves and after the premiere (and to finally clarify those issues which had been doubts), we took a short break for coffee along with delicious pastries and excellent conversation. Back
the audience, it was the turn of Florent. Alternating brilliance with graceful touches of humor, let us speechless with his presentation on the methodology used and the results you get, when you perform interferometry "Super-Speckle" Atik with a Newton 314 and 41cm.
Also we presented in partnership the new version of NR which already allows us to make measurements by speckle interferometry.
Time To end of submissions, the astrophysicist Joseph A. Caballero (for those who came at the State Capitol, the creator of Multiverses) tells us about one of their lines of research that tries to put limits on the gaps between the components of binary systems related physically. It is really curious to know that systems with physical relationship whose components have a separation of up to 2 º ...
Before the dismissal, even had the opportunity to Florent we would make a presentation practice of using the new version of NR with images real ... amazing new utilities and the result ... Even using the worst picture!
Now if you had reached the sad moment of parting. Tòfol summoned us to follow the same line of work so far and proposed to give it a biennial meeting, at which point all were in total agreement wizard ... A glass of champagne ... Hugs ... New friends ... and of course A SOON!
And here ends my brief review of the Second Meeting of OED ...
For more details you notice to the upcoming January issue of Double Star Observer.
